Enhanced Campus Safety at Your Fingertips with CASA Alerts
CASA Alerts by UMass Amherst empowers students and staff with real-time safety notifications and emergency alerts, ensuring a secure campus environment.
CASA Alerts is a versatile mobile application developed by the CASA Engineering Research Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with the objective of enhancing user-centric, context-aware severe weather forecasts and warnings using CASA’s City Warn™ platform. The CASA Alerts Mobile app provides weather information and surveys to users via mobile devices to enhance the comprehension of optimal methods for delivering weather information related to thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, high winds, and floods.
The app's functionality and user experience are tailored to individual users:
- CASA WX users: CASA partners with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the National Weather Service to deliver detailed, rapidly updated radar data to North Central Texas through the CASA WX program. Users in cities and towns supporting CASA WX receive severe weather warnings from the National Weather Service, hyper-local alerts from CASA radar data, Understory sensors, and local storm spotter reports based on their alerting preferences and areas of interest. Periodically, feedback is solicited from users through mobile phone surveys.
- Other users: These participants take part in surveys that gauge individuals' perceptions of severe weather risks. Different types of weather information may be provided to various users, while some may not receive any weather-related alerts at all to help gather insights into current practices regarding severe weather information.
About us: CASA's initiatives have been bolstered by several National Science Foundation grants such as Hazards SEES (#1331572), Building Innovation Capacity (#1632193), FIA-NP, and FIA (#1345300, #1040781). Participating academic institutions include the University of Massachusetts, Colorado State University, and the University of Delaware.
